The AlwaysOn editorial team, along with partners at Walden Venture Capital, Azure Ventures, Draper Fisher, Jurvetson, Docomo Capital, Accel Partners, Digital Captial Advisors, SingTel, Sierra Ventures, GrowthPoint Technology Partners, FirstMark Capital, Battery Ventures, Canaan Partners, DCM, KPMG, Hewlett-Packard, Bridge Bank, Fenwick & West, Silicon Valley Bank, and industry experts across the globe dug deeply into the entrepreneurial community to identify the top 100 private companies that are bringing their disruptive skills into the mobile space, turning smartphone and tablet users into sophisticated, savvy consumer and business users as well as providing huge value-creation opportunities for investors and entrepreneurs.

The heated operating system wars have shown little signs of abating, with Apple’s iOS, Google’s Android, and Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 continuing to make strong inroads into the mobile userbase. This continued competition has led to a maturing mobile application industry that’s brought incredible breakthroughs, especially for business users. No longer just a toy for consumers, the smartphone is now a sophisticated device for all user levels and is breaking into the business enterprise environment.

This year, the tablet sector is gaining serious attention from users and developers. While Apple’s iPad dominates the market, Google’s Android and Microsoft’s Windows 8 tablets are gaining in popularity, as their respective operating systems become more refined. Application innovators are responding in kind by bringing their disruptive skills to the corporate and enterprise world, giving scope and purpose to mobile users in the business world. There is no question that the opportunities are opening up almost faster than entrepreneurs can respond.

This year’s OnMobile 100 companies represent leadership in the global innovation community and are developing solutions and technologies that are rapidly pushing outside the bounds of existing markets and away from established players. Companies were selected based on a set of five criteria: innovation, market potential, commercialization, stakeholder value, and media buzz.
